After Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service provided an equipped Fire Engine to the town of Thika, Africa and USAR firefighters, including pictured Darryll Pyniger, Alec Martin, Denise Knight and Lee Gifford raised over £5000.00 to have it shipped to its destination What could be better? 'We realised' says Daryll 'that having all the equipment in the world would not help if they were not properly instructed in modern day fire fighting methods'.
Consequently nine fighters are now trying to raise the funds to accompany the fire engine and spend four weeks training local fire fighters.
They plan to help with the recruitment of fire fighters, train them to an appropriate level in the required subjects and then subsequently expand on this in the future as part of building a sustainable partnership.
We are working in partnership with 'Out of Afrika' as part of a project to create employment in the Thika area.
Additional Information
The town of Thika is 40 km North of Nairobi and as part of the Central Highlands is at 6,000 feet laying almost on the Equator.
The 'Out of Afrika' charity has a 7 acre site on the outskirts of Thika with a day-crewed fire station.
HFRS will assist in expanding existing contracts with numerous schools in the area on a structured programme of Community Education. Due to the vast distances and time taken to attend fires, education in prevention will without doubt save many lives.
